It can also help to increase your survival chance if you have the knowledge, plus it is a lot of fun. Here are some of the methods that you can do to start your own fire.
Making Fire With Friction
This method of fire making is the oldest method of starting your own fire. There are many different techniques that you can use to start a fire using friction. The first thing that you have to keep in mind is the wood type that you will use for the fire board as well as the spindle. The spindle is a stick that you will use to create friction with the fireboard, which then creates an ember that you will use to start the fire. The best types of fireboard and spindle sets are, juniper, cottonwood, aspen, willow, cypress and cedar. Make sure that the wood you’ll be using is dry, dry it out if it’s not.
1. The Hand Drill
The hand drill is the ultimate primitive method one can use to start a fire. The first thing that you need to do is to build yourself a tinder nest. The tinder nest can be made out of anything that can easily catch a fire such as dry grass, bark or leaves. Next, cut a notch that’s shaped like a v on your fireboard. The notch will be the place where you will place the spindle to spin it. Place a bark under the notch. This is to catch the ember made by the friction between the fireboard and the spindle..
After you have done all of the above, it is time to start spinning! Put the spindle into the notch that you have made on your fireboard. Start rolling the spindle between your hands while maintaining pressure on the board. Keep spinning the spindle until an ember is formed from the fireboard. When the ember has formed, tap your fireboard to drop the ember in the bark and transfer it to your tinder nest. Gently blow the ember to get a flame started.
2. Flint and steel
When you are going on a camping trip, it is much better to carry around a flint and steel set. Matches and lighters can get wet, and if it is raining heavily then they become pretty much useless to start a fire. So starting from now, always remember to bring along your own set whenever you have a camping trip.
To start a fire using the flint and steel, you first need to prepare a char. If you have one, a piece of birch or fungus will do just fine. First you have to hold the rock and the char cloth together, make sure that there is an edge hanging out between your thumb and forefinger. Next, strike the steel against the flint until you see sparks flying off and land on your char cloth. Last but not least, after you have enough spark to start a fire, pour the char cloth into a tinder and gently blow on the sparks to get the flame burning.
Fire Making Using Lenses
If you are looking for an easier technique of starting you fire, then try the lens based method. This is by far the easiest matchless method, and the only tools that you need is a glass lens and the sun.
To create your fire, you will be needing a glass lens that will help you to focus sunlight on a certain spot. Binocular lenses, magnifying glass and eyeglass all work. Add some water to lenses as it helps to intensify the beam. Next you have to hold the lens towards the sun to make sure that the beam focuses on a specific spot. Just like the methods above, all you need to do is put a tinder nest and you will have your own fire started in a couple of minutes. Keep in mind that you still need the sun to make it work, so just make sure to learn of the above methods as well.
