Traveling can be quite an expensive hobby especially if you are on a budget. However, money is not an issue if you know how to plan your expenses well. Budgeting for a trip might be an exciting experience for some, getting them all psyched up about the trip. Nevertheless, budgeting is quite hard to do for some people but it is better than running out of money half of the way and having to ask for help from your friends and your parents. Here are some tips on how to save money and prepare a budget plan for your next dream trip.
How much money do i have to use?
Start planning your budget with the big expenses first, your flights and accommodation. Google the price of the flight tickets and move from there. Do some research on your accommodations as well, especially those that offer free breakfast cutting the cost of buying your own. Search for deals on flight tickets and book it early, since the price will be significantly cheaper.
Plan out how long that you’ll be away for and then work your way through the daily expenses and meal costs. You should also add in some extra budget for entry tickets, souvenirs and transport. It’s okay to allow for occasional extra expense during your travels, don’t let money stop from experiencing new things such as extra cocktails or activities like skydiving.
A good idea for budget travelers is to look for cheap destinations. Southeast Asian countries are cheaper than Europe so it is recommended to travel there. The countries are beautiful as well, with tropical weather and diverse cultures, you will have an enjoyable experience while making a dent on your wallet.
Pre trip costs
Remember to add in pre trip costs such as visas, travel insurance and immunizations. Search for reliable agencies that provide travel insurance as some people have been scammed because of unreliable agencies and were left to pay for expensive medical care in foreign soil. Some travelers would skip on travel insurance but we really recommend to get one in case of emergencies (yes they do happen).
Getting the proper immunizations is also recommended, especially if you want to travel to countries that you have never been to. There might be some diseases that certain countries have and if you do not have the proper medical care, you might be in for a terrible trip experience. Some diseases might be deadly to you so it’s better to be safe than sorry or that might be your last time travelling the globe.
Do not overspend on your travelling gear. First timers, especially, make the mistake of buying too much stuff before they even go to their destination. This mistake will not only cost you money but your luggage will slow you down, becoming quite a hassle on your travels. Prioritize on your purchases, a strong, comfortable backpack is a good investment, so look for one that has a good quality and can last you the whole trip. Shoes are also an important investment as you will walk a lot during your travels so it is okay to spend more on high quality travelling shoes.
How to keep your money safe while you travel
Those that have traveled might suggest that you buy the infamous money pouch or fanny pack. Most travelers carry them, especially those with a family. While the fanny pack does provide a bit of protection on your money, it is not actually a necessity since there are other simpler methods. The same effect will be applied if you put your valuables inside a zipped up pocket.
Always carry your money in different forms, through cash, credit card and an ATM card. It is always a good idea to diversify your money, only carry little cash on you so that you would not attract the wrong kind of attention. Keep in mind that you should go entirely cashless as most transactions require cash instead. There are good ATM locations around the country you are traveling to but there are times when they break down, run out of cash, or fail entirely. So it is a good idea to carry some loose cash on you to pay for things as you walk around. Make sure to put your wallet where it is convenient and safe from potential pickpockets so that they stay safe.
Follow the basic guidelines of staying safe during your travels. Do not walk through dodgy neighborhoods and sketchy back alleys, do not carry around massive amounts of cash, and use hostel lockers or hotel safes to ensure the safety of your valuables. If you have gotten the basics memorized then you will be in for a more enjoyable experience.
